Infrastructure Development
Mount Washington and Duquesne Heights were founded in the early 1800s. These are neighborhoods that are topographically-challenged, are transportation-challenged and suffer from aging infrastructure that was not designed for 21st Century demands. There are insufficient funds to improve, let alone completely maintain, local infrastructure, which in turn adversely affects the tourist experience along Grandview Avenue and the ability of residents to access necessities and amenities. MWCDC’s Infrastructure Development programming addresses local needs on a case-by-case basis and, when possible, addresses system-wide issues.
Current programs include:
The Virginia/Wyoming/Southern intersection redesign project, funded through the Neighborhood Initiatives Fund of the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh.
Advocacy for maintenance projects along Grandview Avenue.
Coordination with the Port Authority of Allegheny County regarding maintenance of the Monongahela Incline, and contingency planning for when the Incline is closed for repairs.
Implementation of the South Metro Area Revitalization through Transit/Transit Revitalization Investment District, South Hills Junction Corridor Study (SMART/TRID) project.
Development of an Integrated McArdle Roadway/Grandview Avenue/Wyoming Street Design Plan.
Coordination with the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure regarding plans for the neighborhood, including traffic calming and pedestrian safety.
